Downtown continues to grow as a residential neighborhood. 1,303 new residential units were delivered in 2023 and 3,062 more currently under construction. This includes rental apartments and condos. Downtown’s population grew by approximately 850 people over the last year. Residents aged 25 to 34 continue to represent the largest share of population in downtown, however, from 2022 to 2023 the median age of downtown increased from 35 to 37. I-35 Caps have been funded - The City of Austin plans to construct a 5.3-acre freeway cap over I-35 between Cesar Chavez and Fourth Street. The usage of the cap is currently going through public opinions and recommendations. Learn how to get involved in the link.
Plans for redevelopment along 6th St - Grant Plaza releases new plans that call for 258 residential units, restaurants, and retail. The project would cover 1.8 acres along Fifth and Sixth streets, between Red River and Sabine streets.
